Building off trends established by the fiscal 2023 budget, the service is asking for even more retirements in FY24 while seeking to launch new efforts like a program to field autonomous wingmen. “We've built a budget that we think has a reasonable balance between current-, midterm- and longer-term investments, if you will, or capabilities,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said.
The Air Force announced major cuts for both programs as part of the fiscal 2023 budget release.
The Air Force’s decision to curtail the buy raises major questions about the future of the service’s combat search and rescue mission.
"By caving to pressure inside the Pentagon and hiding unclassified information behind a pseudo classification, the current leaders of DOT&E are undermining the effectiveness of their own agency," said Dan Grazier, a fellow with the Project on Government Oversight.
“We’re back on the contract schedule," Sikorsky program director Greg Hames told reporters visiting the company's test site.
